Global rum ambassador Ian Burrell and his team are celebrating after creating the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest rum tasting event.
Representing South America, Diplomatico was sipped and savoured with commentary from its international marketing manager, Xavier Herrera, while Puerto Rico’s number-one premium rum from the Serralles distillery, Don Q, was sampled with chief operations officer John Eason.
Cuba’s Havana Club was tasted under the tutelage of its master blender Asbel Morales Lorenzo while Pusser’s Rum was presented by head of rum procurement George Freegard.
Angostura brought a flavour of Trinidad with master distiller John Georges, while the finale was revered master blender Joy Spence presenting Appleton’s Rum. The tastings were followed by a Q&A.
Guests included Michael Pitt, who plays Jimmy Darmody in TV series Boardwalk Empire, and former world heavyweight boxer David “The Hayemaker” Haye.
The event was held on Thursday October 9, the day before the trade-only Boutique RumFest and the weekend-long RumFest aimed at consumers. The tasting and the shows were organised by global rum ambassador Ian Burrell.
Ian said: “Rum is about history and that’s what we all achieved today. It was a true honour to be joined by such esteemed representatives of the category and to enjoy such a special evening with so many rum lovers.”
